Self-Service at the Main Library

In Children’s Services, furniture, computers, toys, and play areas are unavailable.

What to know before your Main Library visit (after December 16)

  • Main Library building open hours are 10 am-6 pm Mondays-Saturdays.
    • Special visiting hour for high-risk patrons only: 10-11 am Mondays-Saturdays.
    • The Main Library parking garage will be open, and the gates will be up to avoid any complications entering or exiting.
  • Face coverings are required to enter the building, and must be worn correctly at all times.
    • Call us when you arrive if you need a mask. (Signs with the phone number to call are posted at each service desk.)
  • Main Library total building capacity is set at 120 people; 40 by floor.
    • Check the bar at the top of the website and the Main Library vestibule and elevator screens for real-time updates.
    • During open hours, staff walkthroughs and periodic audio announcements will be made to share updates to building capacity.
  • There are no library staff physically available at customer service desks.
    • In the lobby and on each floor, there is a phone number posted for patrons to either use their cell phone or the desk phone provided to ask questions of library staff.
  • Gathering spaces are unavailable.
  • Bring your cell phone, wipes, and hand sanitizer.
    • We will have disinfectant wipes and hand sanitizer available, but it is always a good idea to have your own should supplies be running low.

Access physical collections (after December 16)

  • No self-checkout stations are available in the lobby; self-checkout stations are located on in Children’s Services (floor 1) and floors 2 and 3.
  • Please put anything you pull from the shelves but choose not to check out into the specially marked boxes on each floor.
  • Since August 12, Oak Park cardholders have been able to place holds on material from other SWAN libraries and submit interlibrary loan requests. However, many university and other public libraries are unable to fill interlibrary loan requests. This may cause delays, or we may be unable to fill your request at this time.
  • No physical newspapers will be available. Search digital newspapers »
  • Physical magazines (including current issues) are available for checkout. To browse available physical options, search the catalog. You can also place issues on hold for pickup. See what you can read digitally through PressReader and Flipster.

Return items at the Main Library & curbside book drops (after December 16)

  • At the Main Library, you can return materials inside the Main Library vestibule and lobby.
  • Curbside returns/book drops are open:
    • Outside the Main Library main entrance
    • In the book drop located in Village of Oak Park Parking Lot 55 (at North Boulevard between Kenilworth and Oak Park avenues). See on Google Maps »
    • Outside Maze Branch on Gunderson Avenue
    • Outside Dole Branch on Augusta Street
  • Once items are returned, they are placed in quarantine. This means it will take longer than it used to for your account to reflect changes. More »

Only Oak Park cardholders: use computers by appointment (after December 16)

  • Only Oak Park cardholders can make appointments
  • Call ahead to 708.697.6943 to schedule a 45-minute desktop computer session.
  • Everyone can use Main Library third-floor self-service print, scan, and fax capabilities.
  • Children’s first-floor computers are unavailable.
